What is On-Call Interpreter®?

On-Call Interpreter®, is a pay-as-you-go, over-the-phone interpretation (OPI) service with no monthly minimum, connecting you to human interpreters in over 100 languages, in seconds!

Telephonic interpreters are ideal for clients with a limited budget, those that need interpretation for an extensive list of languages, or those that have too short a lead time to arrange for live, on-the-spot interpretation.

International Contact’s On-Call Interpreter® offers clients telephonic (or video) access to interpreters in more than 100 languages within seconds. On-Call Interpreter® utilizes sophisticated call center technology and highly skilled staff that matches qualified over-the-phone interpreters with callers, regardless of their location.

Until now companies with the technology and infrastructure to offer OPI services required big volumes and large minimums, making them available only to large organizations. With  On-Call Interpreter® the entry-level plan provides users with 45-minutes for $100.

Increased usage reduces the cost-per-minute, the heaviest users pay as little as $1.15 per minute. Video Remote Interpreting or VRI is very useful for ASL assignments and is also available on-demand during business hours and by appointment otherwise.

General Questions

Q: Where can I find the full language list?

Q: What is the difference between Medical and Medical (not certified)?
A: Medical will connect you to a certified interpreter and Medical (not certified) will connect you to a specialized interpreter, but certification is not needed.

Q: Is the On-Call Interpreter® application free?
A: Yes, just download, enter your login information and you’re good to go!

Over-the-Phone Interpreting (OPI)

Q: What is the process you need to follow to use the OPI service?
A: You need to call the phone number provided (844) 723-6288, and then key in your PIN + #. After that, it varies from one language to the other.

  1. For the languages on the quick-dials, you only need to enter the pre-selected code.
  2. For the rest of the languages, there are 2 options:
    1. Say the language when prompted and press #
    2. Press *, key in the first 3 letters of the language, and press #. If there are more than one option for those three letters, the system will number them so you select the one you one. For instance, if you key in *DAR#, the system will say “The language you enter is ambiguous, please select 1 for Faroese, 2 for Dari, 3 for Farsi, 4 for Eastern Krahn.” Press 2 and you will be connected to an interpreter.
  3. Sometimes, when you connect to a language, instead of the interpreter, you will get connected to an operator. This might happen if the language is not one of the top 25 languages. In this case, you will need to tell the operator the language that you are requesting, and they will connect you to the interpreter.

Q: We are planning to offer the On-Call Interpreter® to other departments. How do I get additional PINs?
A: Just ask us! Additional charges may apply depending on your plan.

Q: When does the clock actually start, when I dial my PIN or when an interpreter comes on the line.
A: The clock starts when the interpreter joins the conversation.

Q: Can a single PIN be used simultaneously by different users?
A: yes

Q: I lost my pin for OPI, where can I retrieve it?

Q: When do we have to schedule OPI?

Q: How far in advance do I need to schedule OPI?
A: At least 48 hours.

Q: Is there a minimum charge associated with OPI?
A: Only if you pre-schedule it which is a 1-hour minimum.

Q: What if I need to cancel an OPI pre-scheduled appointment?
A: Cancellation will need to be done 24 hours before the scheduled appointment otherwise, we are charged.

Video Remote Interpreting (VRI)

Q: When do we have to schedule VRI?
A: VRI is scheduled if it’s beyond office hours 9 am – 5 pm PST.

Q: Is there a minimum charge associated with VRI?
A: Only if you pre-schedule it which is a 1-hour minimum.

Q: What if I need to cancel an VRI pre-scheduled appointment?
A: Cancellation will need to be done 24 hours before the scheduled appointment otherwise, we are charged.
