Innovation at its best is when it creates more value for the clients and the people that make it happen. It can increase productivity, making changes as subtle as placing cooling fans at selective locations on the assembly line, or allowing employees to work longer shifts. It can also mean an intricate collaboration among multiple processes like adapting the subtitling process in order to keep up with a new technology like xR (Extended Reality).
In a world that is increasingly more virtual, xR is a breakthrough technology that combines high resolution LED video walls and flooring with 360 degree virtual backgrounds that are rendered in Unreal Engine or Notch content environments and then tracked, composited, and recorded in real time to create immersive experiences. A godsend during the pandemic, xRStage-SF is the highest-resolution xR production stage ever built by WorldStage and Intrepid Studios. It allows clients to capture multiple types of corporate presentations and messaging very similar to how they were produced using traditional sets, providing an immersive experience for their audience.
The project International Contact worked on, a highly-secretive corporate international product launch created using xR, consisted of multiple interviews and presentations, some running as long as 75 minutes. The flexibility offered by xR meant there was a very narrow timeframe for the translation team to produce the final subtitles. Working with constantly updated versions, for both the US and the China launches, created project management challenges related to organization, quality, and profitability. These challenges required intricate collaboration and planning between the clients and the production team (consisting of 2 project managers and 3 localization veterans). We found that when we have a deeper understanding of the process or skill set that each team member brings to the table, with incremental innovations coming from each part the result is a nearly effortless collaboration.
With some critical lessons learned, International Contact lived to tell about it’s success, and we have been pleased to support Intrepid Creative on other recent press conference subtitling in xR.
